NOC Enid sweeps past Tonkawa

TONKAWA — Xavier McClish scored 21 points to lead a balanced attack as the Northern Oklahoma College Enid Jets beat archrival NOC Tonkawa, 90-79 in Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference basketball action Monday.

The win completed a sweep Monday night for the NOC Enid cagers.

The Lady Jets, with four players in double figures, routed the Lady Mavericks 96-52 in the women’s game to raise their record to 3-0 in conference and 12-2 overall.

McClish was joined in double figures by Dalen Qualls with 18, Brandon Burns with a season-high 12 and Trey Cohee with 11 as the Jets  raised their record to 2-1 in conference and 10-4 overall. It was the Jets’ second conference road win.

“You take as many road wins as you can in this conference,’’ said NOC Enid assistant Ryan Mahoney. “It still wasn’t 40 minutes (of good play), but we played pretty well, especially on the road against our rival.’’

The Jets raced off to a 42-32 halftime lead and were in control most of the way. The Mavericks were within five points with 1:52 remaining, but NOC Enid made seven of eight free throws down the stretch for the win.

“We made some shots early,’’ Mahoney said. “Our defense was very sharp. We pressed them the entire first half and most of the second half and we gave them some problems.’’

It was the fourth time NOC Enid had scored 90 or more points in a game. McClish had his six 20-point plus game.

“This is the kind of team we thought we would have,’’ Mahoney said about the balanced attack. “We have a lot of guys who can make shots and plays. We don’t have to rely on one guy. Our guards are starting to feel it. We have three or four guys who are shooting it like we thought they could, and our post play was solid.’’

The Jets had been having problems with slow starts earlier this season. Not so Mon-day.

“Making those first couple of shots relaxed us,’’ Mahoney said. “We just weren’t running around. We were calm and cool after making our first couple of buckets.’’

Lady Jets 96, Lady Mavs 52 Marisha Wallace led the Lady Jets’ attack with 20 points. She was joined in double figures by Ashlyn Briegge and Sherri Lang with 18 and Justice Payne with 16 as the Lady Jets had their second-highest scoring total of the season.

NOC Enid jumped out to a 46-20 halftime lead and never looked back.

It was almost a reversal of last year’s game, when the Lady Mavericks hit 19 three-pointers in beating the Lady Jets 97-63. NOC Tonkawa was only 6-of-27 from long distance Monday.

“We made sure we contested their three-point shooters,’’ said Lady Jets coach Scott Morris. “We did a really good job of that.’’

The smaller Lady Mavs were unable to slow Wallace inside as she had her second 20-point game of the season.

“We just played really well,’’ Morris said. “Marisha established the inside game early, and that opened up our perimeter shooting. We were able to knock those shots down. Sherri Lang and Vanessa Bledsoe did a good job of the in-between shots. All three phases of our game were going strong.’’

Lang had her season high. Briegge had her sixth-straight game in double figures. Payne was in double figures for the ninth time in 10 games.

“To beat Tonkawa and get a conference win on the road, you can’t beat that,’’ Morris said. “It was like any rivalry game. There’s so much anticipated and intensity when you do get some separation like we did, you can deflate them after awhile.’’

The NOC Enid cagers will be back in action Thursday at home against conference rival Eastern. Women will tip off at 6, followed the men at 8.
