EHS’ Overbeck, Harris earn state wrestling berths

BIXBY, Okla. — Enid’s Zac Overbeck (220) and Caleb Harris (182) avenged earlier losses to qualify for the state wrestling tournament at the Eastern Regional Saturday.

Overbeck lost to Kyler Childers of Sand Springs 6-4 in the finals to finish second. He avenged two earlier losses to Steven Allen of Broken Arrow 2-1 in the semifinals. Overbeck reached the finals of all five of Enid’s tournaments this season.

Harris beat Owasso’s Landon Hendrickson 2-1 for third after losing to Hendrickson in the quarterfinals. That gave Harris the distinction of qualifying for state in both Georgia and Oklahoma.

The top four finishers advanced to the state meet next Friday and Saturday at the State Fair Arena.

“They just found a way to score and make things happen,” said Enid coach Corey Clayton. “Zac has been a lot more physical and aggressive. Caleb just kept pressure on Hendrickson until he (Hendrickson) made a mistake.’’

Heavyweight Mason Dillard and 152-pounder John Choi had wins in the tournament.

“It was just a tough regional,’’ Clayton said. “A lot of good wrestlers didn’t qualify. The guys who didn’t place were disappointed, but we had a good season. A lot of guys gained some life skills as well as wrestling skills.’’

Choi, Dillard and Keegan Clayton wrestled for the final time for EHS.
