EHS softball ends season on run-rule loss

BROKEN, Arrow, Okla. — The fourth inning of Enid’s regional elimination softball game was like a scene out of “The Twilight Zone.”

The Pacers and Bixby were in a scoreless tie going into the bottom of the fourth inning until six Enid errors and a couple of walks led to a 13-run Spartan explosion.

Bixby’s Haley Young then completed her no-hitter in the top of the fifth as the Spartans came away with a 13-0 run-rule victory to end Enid’s season at 16-20.

It was the fourth straight year the Pacers were two-and-done at regionals.

“Ally (Pacers pitcher Lewis) threw well (allowing only three hits), but our defense broke down,’’ Enid coach Marsha Cusack said. “We were playing well until the fourth.’’

Young pitched a one-hitter against Enid on Wednesday.

“We struggled at the plate,’’ Cusack said, “but she’s a good pitcher. She gave up only two hits against Broken Arrow. She’s legitimate.’’

Cusack, before the season, set a goal of going at least .500 and winning a game at the regional tournament for the Pacers. EHS fell short of that at 16-20.

“I still felt like we had a good season when you look at the district we were in, and the tournaments that we went to,’’ she said. “We were young. We got some good kids coming back. We have some good eighth-graders coming up.’’

It was the last game for five Pacer seniors — Shelley Mueller, Abby Lee, Ashton King, McKayla Herbst and Hannah Nicholas.

“We’re going to miss them,’’ Cusack said. “You hate to see them go, but most of them will be moving on to other sports. I hope the rest of their senior year is a successful one.’’

Cusack said she feels “the program is going in the right direction.’’ EHS will have four pitchers next season, which should give them more diversity, Cusack said.

“These were the most pleasant kids that I have ever had,’’ Cusack said. “We all got along and we didn’t have a lot of drama. We would have liked to have had a win (at regionals), but in the end it was a good year.’’
