Pacers fall in softball regional

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Enid’s bats went quiet in a 10-0 run-rule loss to Bixby in the first round of the Class 6A regional softball tournament Wednesday.

The Pacers (16-19) are scheduled to play the Bixby-Broken Arrow loser at noon today in an elimination game. That winner advances to the championship round at 2. If a second final is needed, it will be played at 4.

Enid, which came into the playoffs having won eight of its last nine games, managed only one hit — a single by Abby Lee — against the Spartans.

“It was not our best outing,’’ said Enid head coach Marsha Cusack. “We struggled; it’s not how we have been playing.’’

Bixby shut out Enid 1-0 at the Broken Arrow Tournament Aug. 16.

The pitching and defense were off a bit, too.

“If you don’t keep your velocity and hit the corners against a team like Bixby, it’s going to cost you,’’ Cusack said. “They didn’t hit the ball enough to run-rule us, but we didn’t make plays.’’

The Pacers will have to win three games today to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2005. EHS has lost twice to Broken Arrow (10-0 and 3-1) this season.

“We just have to move on,’’ Cusack said. “We know we can handle Bixby, and if we play well, we have a chance against Broken Arrow. We’re going back to the motel and talk about what we didn’t do well and fix it and come back (Thursday).’’

The Pacers are looking for their first postseason victory since 2009.
