ENID, Okla. —
Technically, today and Saturday’s Jenks “Last Chance Meet’’ isn’t the last chance for Enid swimmers to get qualifying times for the state meet Feb. 15-16.
“But it’s going to be our best chance,’’ said Enid coach Ginny Shipley. “The competition is going to be very good and it’s in a fast pool. We’re hoping the kids who are close will get pumped up and get that state cut.’’
Michael Johnson needs to cut his time in the 50-yard freestyle from 25.45 seconds to 25.25. Jeremy Crise, in the 100 free, needs to cut a 55.82 to 55.50. Ashley Valdez, in the girls 200 IM, needs to cut a 2:37.69 to 2:36.
The top 16 finishers in today’s preliminaries will qualify for the consolation and championship finals Saturday. The next eight best times will get another shot as well, although it won’t count for team points.
The meet is important, too, for Enid’s state qualifiers since it’s the site for the state championships. The field includes Jenks, Bartlesville, Stillwater, Union, Carl Albert, Owasso, Broken Arrow, Metro Christian and Tulsa Kelley among others.
“Our swimmers are always networking,’’ Shipley said. “They want to know who is swimming what at state so they will know what to swim. A lot of our girls are still trying to figure out what they will swim. This meet might be an indication of how they will work out.’’
Enid will host Piedmont Feb. 8 in its last dual of the season. It will be the Pacers and Plainsmen’s Senior Night.
