ENID, Okla. —
Zach Overbeck and Jake Scott had falls, but the Plainsmen wrestlers still fell to archrival Stillwater 42-28 in a dual at Waller Middle School Tuesday.
The Pioneers won eight of the 14 matches with the Plainsmen taking six, representing the most wins this season for EHS against an Oklahoma opponent.
Overbeck pinned Cody Knight at 195 pounds, while Scott flattened Cyntrell Carden at 220.
Billy Grothe got an injury default over Ben Teegarden at 126 pounds in one of the feature duals of the evening.
Freshman Anthony Gonzales earned some bonus points for the Plainsmen with a 15-3 major decision at 145 pounds.
“That was huge,’’ said Enid coach Jory Dick. “The kid wants to win. He doesn’t know any better. All he knows how to do is to go full speed and that’s what he did.’’
Enid heavyweight Mason Dillard defeated D.J. Peckham, 4-2.
Keegan Clayton got Enid’s other win with a 9-2 decision over Logan Anderson at 152.
“I truly thought we had a chance to win seven matches,’’ Dick said. “We lost a couple of matches that I thought we should have won. We had a chance to score some bonus points, but we didn’t pull the trigger.’’
Dick said he still was encouraged. The Plainsmen next go to Claremore on Thursday.
“We’re better than we were two months ago,’’ he said. “We can still win every dual and not qualify anybody for state. I think our improvement is going to show when it comes to the regionals when everything is on the line.’’
