PONCA CITY, Okla. — Jerry Kearney’s RBI double in the second inning provided Enid with its only run of the day as the Plainsmen fell Monday at Ponca City, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Wildcats.

The Wildcats’ Josh Evans outdueled Plainsmen starter Zeke Sarver as both hurlers went the distance in the District 6A-4 contest.

Evans allowed only four hits and struck out nine batters as the Wildcats continued their hot streak, winning their 10th game in their last 11 contests to raise their overall record to 15-6 and 5-5 in district play. Ponca City’s recent torrid pace has included winning tournaments at Bartlesville and Shawnee.

The Plainsmen fell behind 2-0 after the first inning before Kearney’s RBI double in the second drove home Cole Floyd who had reached on a base hit. Floyd finished 2-for-2.

The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the second inning to go up 3-1 and Enid was kept off the board the rest of the way by Evans, who got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning.

The Plainsmen failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity in the sixth inning after loading the bases with nobody out. Christian Voitik (2-for-2) led off the inning with a double. Floyd  and Jake Walker then walked to put Plainsmen at every base. Zane Herbal then struck out and Zeke Sarver was robbed of at least one RBI when a hot shot to second resulted in a double play instead that ended the inning and ended Enid’s largest scoring threat.

Sarver (1-6) was the hard luck loser for the Plainsmen despite pitching a complete game and allowing only one earned run. The Plainsmen (7-14, 2-7) committed three errors.

Ponca City visits Enid today for a 5 p.m. game at David Allen Memorial Ballpark. The game can be heard on KCRC (1390 AM).
