Plainsmen win 1,600 relay at Bethany

BETHANY, Okla. —  Enid’s boys 1,600-meter relay won its second straight gold medal to highlight the Plainsmen and Pacers’ day at the Bethany Invitational track meet Saturday.

Seth Handley, Raheem Mitchell, Leon McCoy and Alex Lofton combined for a season-best time of three minutes and 24.88 seconds. That was three seconds faster than their winning time at Ardmore two weeks ago.

Handley, Mitchell and McCoy teamed with Johnny Lawrence to finish second in the 4x200 relay in 1:31.3, another season best.

EHS would have had another gold medal in the 4x100, but the Plainsmen were disqualified for running out of their lane.

The Plainsmen were fifth in the boys meet with 59 points.

“Our relays are doing fabulous,’’ said EHS coach Joe Miranov. “If we can tweak our hand-offs, we can take another two or three seconds off those times.’’

Lofton was second in the 200 meters (22.0) and 400 meters (49.3, a personal best).

“The big thing with Alex is his consistency,’’ Miranov said. “Coach (Kareem) Sears and coach (Shawn) Mills have been getting him to focus. He’s really worked hard.’’

Handley was fourth in the 400 (50.8). McCoy was sixth in the 200 with a 22.8.

Rob Frantz was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 11 inches.

The girls were 11th with 19 points and four fourth-place finishes.

The 3,200 relay of Kaylnn Barton, Tyler Burge, Andi Pierce and Savannah D’Auteuil had a time of 11:14. Burge had a 13:40 in the 3,200. Pierce had a 6:03 in the 1,600.

Macy Adams tied for fourth in the high jump with a 4-10. It was the fourth straight meet Adams had placed in.

The Plainsmen and Pacers will return to action Friday at Putnam City.

Luke Wakamatsu has heard the question before.
The shortstop for DBAT Gallegos, the thus-far still unblemished frontrunner in the Connie Mack South Plains Regional, doesn’t exactly have a common last name. And his dad doesn’t exactly have a common resume, either.
