Chelf earns OSU academic honor

STILLWATER, Okla. — It’s been an eventful few days for Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf.

Less than week after OSU head football coach Mike Gundy named Chelf the Cowboys’ starting quarterback, the ex-Enid High School standout earned recognition Monday as Oklahoma State’s male student-athlete of the year.

OSU track and field/cross country standout Natalja Piliusina was named OSU’s female student-athlete of the year.

To qualify for the award, a student-athlete was required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and have completed more than 100 academic credit hours.

“This is the time of the year when we honor our students for their achievements in the classroom,” said Dr. Marilyn Middlebrook, OSU associate athletic director of academic affairs. “In their sports, our athletes have championships and honors they receive. This is their academic championship.”

Chelf received his bachelor’s degree in December.

Chelf is coming off of a junior season that saw him start Oklahoma State’s last five games in 2012, including leading the Cowboys to a 58-14 win over Purdue in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, where he was named MVP after throwing three touchdowns and passing for 197 yards. He finished the season as the Cowboys’ leader with 1,588 yards passing, averaging 198.5 yards per game, as well as a team-leading 15 touchdowns.

The Cowboys’ annual spring football game is April 20. OSU opens the regular season Aug. 31 against Mississippi State in Houston.
