Sports briefs for 7-04-12

ENID — Ex-Lady Jet Anderson

headed for Olympics

Northern Oklahoma College Enid will be represented at the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Rose Anderson, who played for the Lady Jets in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, will be playing for Great Britain’s women’s basketball team.

It’s the first time the Brits have made the Olympic women’s field. They have wins over South Korea, Argentina and Canada in recent international competition.

Anderson helped leAd the Edinburgh Kool Cats to a Scottish League and Cup title as a senior in 2006. From there she played at NOC Enid and the University of Central Oklahoma. She also rowed for UCO.

After UCO, she joined the UWIC Archers in Cardiff, helping them to the league title and the finals of the EBL National Cup.

She was on the Great Britain Futures team at the University World Games in 2009 and 2011.

Meadowlake course

to close at 5 p.m. today

Due to Independence Day festivities at Mea-dowlake Park, Mea-dowlake Golf Course will close at 5 p.m. today.

The city’s annual fireworks show will be at the park at dusk.

Team selling fireworks

to raise funds for rings

The Enid Enforcers semi-pro football team is raising funds to cover the cost of championship rings for the team with proceeds of sales from its fireworks stand today and Thursday.

The Enforcers claimed the Central Football League championship with a 28-21 victory over Joplin, Mo., on June 2.

 It was the team’s first CFL championship.

The Enforcers’ fireworks stand is located on U.S. 81, four miles south of Enid (just north of Waukomis) and is open from 10 a.m. to midnight today and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    DBAT Gallegos, who has been battling adversity all season (lost five players through injuries) took advantage of their opportunities in beating Metroplex rival Dallas Mustangs, 3-0 Sunday in the finals of the Connie South Plains Regional.
    The victory put the DBAT (34-7) into the Connie Mack World Series, which begins Friday at Farmington, N.M.

  • Meadowlake retains Enid Ryder Cup

    Jay Betchan might have a statement a week before he tries to defend his Wheat Capital championship next week.
    Betchan completed a perfect 3-0 record for Meadowlake with a 6-and-4 win over John Petersen as the Municipal Course took the Enid Ryder Cup for the fourth straight year, 131⁄2-101⁄2 overall.
    The two teams split six singles matches Sunday at Oakwood in the final day of the three-day competition.

    It was with a twinge of sadness watching the Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony on Sunday, knowing Oklahoma’s Allie Reynolds still is not in the Hall of Fame and there’s a good chance he won’t be in.

    Frank Thomas choked back tears, Joe Torre apologized for leaving people out of his speech and Tony La Russa said he felt uneasy.
    Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame can have those effects, even on the greats.
    Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the baseball shrine Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000.

  • Gordon nails restart to win Brickyard 400

     With a fifth Brickyard 400 victory on the line Sunday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago.
    Gordon nailed the final restart of the race — no given because restarts have been Gordon’s Achilles heel — to pass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne with 17 laps remaining at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
