EDMOND, Okla. — UCO picked for low

finish in MIAA race



EDMOND (AP) — A pair of pre-season polls pick Central Oklahoma to have a low finish in the 2013 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association football race.

The polls were released Monday during the league’s annual Football Media Day in Kansas City, Mo. The Bronchos, who return 14 starters and 16 other letterman from last year’s 2-8 team, were picked 10th by the coaches and 11th by the media in the 14-team conference. UCO tied for 13th last year in its first season in the MIAA.

Defending champion Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri tied for first in the coaches’ poll. Pittsburg State earned the other two first-place votes and came in third.



Niebrugge captures

Western Amateur title



ROLAND, Ark. (AP) — U.S. Public Links champion Jordan Niebrugge of Oklahoma State  won the Western Amateur final Monday, 3 and 2 over Sean Dale for his third win in three weeks.

Niebrugge and Dale were tied playing the ninth hole Sunday when the final was suspended because of threatening weather. They resumed play Monday and Niebrugge won the first three holes, including birdies on the 10th and 11th, to take a 3-up lead with seven holes to play. Dale birdied 15, but bogeyed the par-3 16th to end the match.

Niebrugge followed his Public Links win with a victory in the Wisconsin State Amateur tourney.  His next stop is the U.S. Amateur Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
