Jones bounces back well for OU

ENID, Okla. — Don’t always trust statistics in football.

Take Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones’ lines in a 24-19 loss to Kansas State on Sept. 22 and in a 41-20 win over Texas Tech Saturday.

He was 28 of 43 for 295 yards and a touchdown against K-State. He was 25 of 40 for 259 yards and two scores against the Red Raiders.

Numbers similar, yet so different.

Against KSU, he fumbled at the goal line, which was recovered for a touchdown and threw an interception, which set up another Wildcats touchdown.

Against Texas Tech, he didn’t throw an interception, the offense didn’t have a turnover and he was praised for his decision making, showing the poise under pressure he didn’t show against K-State.

Landry Jones’ legacy has yet to be fully written at OU, but he’ll be noted for being able to bounce back from bad games or OU losses. Bob Stoops’ most impressive legacy is the Sooners haven’t had back-to-back losses in the regular season since 1999.

Take a look at his history.

2009: Nebraska 10, OU 3 — Jones throws five interceptions as OU fails to score a touchdown for the first time since 1998. The next week, he throws for 392 yards and five touchdowns in a 65-10 rout of Texas A&M.

2009: Texas Tech 41, OU 13 — Jones throws for 262 yards, but the Sooners don’t score a touchdown until  7:30 remaining in the game. Jones, the next week, is 20-of-37 for 224 yards and no interceptions in a 27-0 shutout of Oklahoma State.

2010: Missouri 36, OU 27 — Jones throws for 303 yards, but throws two costly interceptions as the Sooners are knocked off from their No. 1 perch in the BCS. The next week, he throws for 453 yards and four touchdowns in a 43-10 rout of Colorado.

2010: Texas A&M 33, OU 19 — Jones mishandles a snap from center for a safety in the game’s early seconds. He throws for 290 yards and one score, but an interception. The next week, he’s 22 of 29 for 317 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-7 win over Texas Tech.

2011: Texas  Tech 41, OU 38 — Jones can’t be blamed for this loss as he threw for 412 yards and five touchdowns, but much of that came after the Sooners trailed 31-7. The next week, he was 35 of 47 for 505 yards and five touchdowns in a 58-17 rout of Kansas State.

2011: Baylor 45, OU 38 — Jones throws for 447 yards and nearly rallies the Sooners from a 38-24 deficit. The next week, he wasn’t razor sharp — 22 of 43 for 256 yards, but it’s good enough to beat Iowa State on a dreary day, 26-6.

2011: OSU 44, OU 10 — Jones might have had his worst game of his career, throwing two interceptions and fumbling twice. In the following game at the Insight Bowl, he threw for only 161 yards, but did throw a three-yard TD pass to Trent Ratterree in a 31-10 win over Iowa.

Jones can enhance his legacy against Texas Saturday.

With a victory, Jones would surpass Steve Davis as the Sooners’ all-time winningest quarterback. Both currently have 32 wins.

That would give Jones three wins as the starting quarterback against Texas. Davis took OU to three straight wins over the Longhorns from 1973-75. Only two others — Jimmy Harris and Jamelle Holieway —  in the modern era (after World War II) have three wins over UT as the starting quarterback.

That won’t make people forget about the 2011 OSU and this year’s Kansas State game, but it would give him some pretty good bragging rights. Those bragging rights would be enhanced if OU won the rest of its games.
