Seth Sturgeon earns USAO honor

CHICKASHA — Former Enid High School and Enid Majors baseball standout Seth Sturgeon was named University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma male student-athlete of the year, the school announced.

Sturgeon received the school’s Bill and Pat Smith Scholar Athlete Award after maintaining a 3.78 grade point average. He transferred to USAO from Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa.

A sociology major who graduated this past week, Sturgeon has been a steady contributor as one of the Drovers’ starting pitchers.

Sturgeon went 7-1 in 2012 and this season is 7-3 with a 4.45 earned run average and 35 strikeouts and has only allowed 13 walks. He has three complete games for the Drovers, who currently are 32-14.

“He’s an intelligent young man who displays all the qualities I look for in a student-athlete,” said Drovers head coach Mike Ross. “Seth is a hard-working, self-motivated individual who not only strives to excel in everything he does, but also strives to make the people around him better.”

Sturgeon also earned a similar award — the Bill and Pat Smith Scholar-Athlete Scholar-ship — last summer. The school’s baseball stadium also is named for Bill and Pat Smith.

“I was really grateful for it,” Sturgeon said. “The scholarship I got in the fall was helpful, and then to get the award was icing on the cake. I honestly didn’t know it was only handed out to one male and one female. To be that one male was really a blessing.”

Sturgeon, who will serve as the head coach of the Enid Minors this season, hopes to become a highway patrolman in Colorado.

“Though I cannot speak on the requirements for that position, I cannot imagine anyone is better suited to protect and serve the state better than Seth,” Ross said.

Sturgeon also was named a Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week in February.
