Plainsmen likely secure playoffs with 5-0 win

MIDWEST CITY — Following up their upset win Thursday over top-ranked Jenks, the Enid Plainsmen secured a likely playoff spot Friday night with a 5-0 victory over Midwest City.

“It was a really good night and a great way to end the regular season,” said Enid head coach Craig Liddell.

The Plainsmen (8-5, 4-3) likely locked up no worse than a fourth-place finish in District 6A-4, which would land them in the playoffs which begin April 30. If Bixby loses to Moore (in a game also being played Friday night, but the results were not yet available) and also falls to Jenks on Tuesday, the Plainsmen could move up to third place.

The final playoff picture will be determined by the end of Tuesday’s other district games with several mathematical possibilities still in play.

The prospect of making the playoffs this season is “enormous” according to Liddell.

“Last year we lost in the final minutes in our last game to get eliminated,” Liddell said. “We came back this year and worked our socks off. When we dropped the Bixby and Ponca games (earlier this season) by one goal, we told them to keep your heads up and play solid soccer and that’s what they did. To play a third game against a tough opponent in one week, says a lot about them.”

The Plainsmen dominated Friday’s game from start to finish. Oscar Pena opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to put Enid up 1-0 and Armando Gutierrez made it 2-0 with four seconds left in the half. Pedro Braga assisted on both first-half goals.

Edgar Delgadillo scored back-to-back goals in the second half, scoring off of a free kick and then on an assist from Yancarlos Duenas. Felix Mora finished off the scoring on an unassisted goal with six minutes left, after securing a loose ball and slipping between two Bombers defenders.

In the girls game, the Pacers finished the season on a positive note by defeating the Lady Bombers 3-1. The Pacers, who outshot Midwest City 34-1, conclude their season at 5-8 and 2-6 in District 6A-4.

Shelley Mueller, Kaitlin Bell and Brianna Burrow scored goals for the Pacers. Sophie Holle had two assists.
