Rest pays off for Harmon in winning 16s

Enid News and Eagle

ENID, Okla. — A little rest was just what the doctor ordered for Chisholm’s Tyler Harmon at the Intergris Bass Baptist Health Center Open at Oakwood Country Club Saturday.

Harmon, playing in his first tournament coming off an elbow injury, beat No. 2 seed John Zerby 6-2, 6-2 in the Boys 16-Under finals.

“Now, it doesn’t hurt when I hit the ball,’’ Harmon said. “It feels good to win.’’

Harmon, the top seed, had to go three sets before beating William Reynolds of Ramona 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the semifinals. He fell behind 5-1 in the first set.

“I knew that would be a hard match,’’ Harmon said. “He’s a good player. I got off to a slow start, but I started to make my shots and everything fell in together. I just didn’t miss as many shots.’’

The three-set win gave the top-seeded Harmon both momentum and confidence going into the finals.

“I played a lot better than I usually do,’’ Harmon said. “My serves were the main thing for me today. The main reason I won was my serving. I just played great in the finals.’’

Harmon takes as many as 50 serves a session with Oakwood pro Jim Shaughnessy and former Oklahoma State All-American Katya Kolodynska Meier at Oakwood. He goes to Oklahoma City twice a week to practice.

“It’s a lot easier now that school is out,’’ Harmon said. “I can devote all of my time to tennis. Today, I just wanted to play well and get some practice and I did that.’’

Harmon said he was pleased to see Chisholm teammate Lance Kokojan play in the tournament and hopes more of his Longhorn teammates will play this summer.

“They’re coming up here once a week now,’’ Harmon said.

Harmon plans to play in a Missouri Valley Tennis Association Futures Tournament in Oklahoma City next week. There’s another Intergris Bass Baptist Health Center-sponsored tournament in Enid next month and he will play in the MVTA Sectional in August.

“I just want to keep improving and try not to plateau,’’ Harmon said. “I really play playing here (Oakwood). I’m used to the courts and I get to sleep in my own bed.’’

Harmon was the lone local champion in the tournament.

Enid High’s Mia Goulart fell to top-seeded Jenna Noel 6-1, 6-0 in the Girls 16-Under finals. She reached the title match by beating Hannah Berndt of Edmond, 6-4, 6-2 and No. 2 seed Lora Boggs of Edmond 1-6, 7-6, 11-9.

“I’m happy with how I played,’’ Goulart said. “When they came up to the net, I hit some good passing shots and some good serves. I need to work on moving my feet. This is a confidence builder for next year (with Enid). I’m excited about next year.’’

Nine-year-old Jordyn Pax of Enid lost to top-seeded Kalley Smith of Broken Arrow, 6-2, 6-0 in the Girls 12-Under finals.

Top-seeded Joshua Noel of Oklahoma City beat Tate Atkinson of Edmond, 6-2, 6-1 for the Boys 18 title.

No. 2 seed Lauren Harvey of Edmond upset top-seeded Zoe Gray of Broken Arrow, 7-6, 6-1 in the Girls 14s finals.
