Sports briefs for 6-23-13

ENID, Okla. — U-12, U-13 soccer

tryouts set for Saturday

Tryouts for the Enid Soccer Club’s Under 12 and Under 13 competitive teams are 9 a.m. Saturday at the club’s complex on West Poplar. Players should arrive by 8:45.

Registration on for

Hillsdale Firecracker 5K

The Hillsdale Booster Club, in conjunction with the Enid Running Club, will host the fifth-annual Hillsdale Firecracker 5K at 8 a.m. July 4.

A fun run will follow at 9 a.m.

Pre-registration for the race is open until Wednesday. Fees are $25 for those who have pre-registered and $30 for those who registered on race day. Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. There will be a $10 fee for the fun run.

Pre-registration will assure participation of getting a T-shirt.

Funds from the race have helped the Hillsdale community pour a new sidewalk along the east side of Main Street and install new playground equipment in the community’s city park.

Meadowlake Stableford

tournament Saturday

Meadowlake Men’s Association Golf League will be holding a stableford-scoring event at 8:30 a.m. June 29.

The tournament will be flighted by handicaps and is a net event.

Points are as follows: double eagle, nine points; eagle, five points; birdie, 3 points; par, 1 point; bogey, none; double bogey or worst, minus one point.

Cost is $20 and will not include green fees and cart.

Wheat Capital golf

Registration has begun for the Wheat Capital Golf Tournament Aug. 3-4 at Meadowlake Golf Course. It’s the first event for Meadowlake players to qualify for next year’s Enid Ryder Cup.

Cost is $85 for those who sign up and pay before July 20. It’s $90 after that.

Fees include food both days, prizes, green fees, tee prizes and closest to the pin contests. It does not include cart rental.

    DBAT Gallegos, who has been battling adversity all season (lost five players through injuries) took advantage of their opportunities in beating Metroplex rival Dallas Mustangs, 3-0 Sunday in the finals of the Connie South Plains Regional.
    The victory put the DBAT (34-7) into the Connie Mack World Series, which begins Friday at Farmington, N.M.

  • Meadowlake retains Enid Ryder Cup

    Jay Betchan might have a statement a week before he tries to defend his Wheat Capital championship next week.
    Betchan completed a perfect 3-0 record for Meadowlake with a 6-and-4 win over John Petersen as the Municipal Course took the Enid Ryder Cup for the fourth straight year, 131⁄2-101⁄2 overall.
    The two teams split six singles matches Sunday at Oakwood in the final day of the three-day competition.

    Frank Thomas choked back tears, Joe Torre apologized for leaving people out of his speech and Tony La Russa said he felt uneasy.
    Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame can have those effects, even on the greats.
    Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the baseball shrine Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000.

     With a fifth Brickyard 400 victory on the line Sunday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago.
    Gordon nailed the final restart of the race — no given because restarts have been Gordon’s Achilles heel — to pass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne with 17 laps remaining at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
