Watkins takes Muskogee football job

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Former Alva and Chisholm football coach Rafe Watkins has resigned at Guthrie to take a similiar position at 6A Muskogee.

Watkins, who had been at Guthrie since 2001, took the Bluejays to state titles in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2013.

“We’re thrilled to have him,’’ Muskogee superintendent Mike Garde said in a media release. “Coach Watkins comes with the experience to move Muskogee in a positive direction. His proven experience in 5A football will be beneficial in developing our students into champions on and off the field.’’

Watkins holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Northwestern Oklahoma State.

He had a 132-20 record at Guthrie and 146-46 overall.

Muskogee was 3-7 last season under Josh Blankenship who resigned after three seasons as head coach of the Roughers to take the position of quarterbacks coach at the University of Tulsa.
