LAWRENCE, Kan. —
Ex-Enid star Alex Jones, who overcame a torn ACL, was named the 2014 recipient of the Marlene Mawson Exemplary Student Athlete Award Wednesday night.
The award is presented by the University of Kansas to one female student athlete each year that played an integral role on her team and demonstrates strong character and leadership qualities, while also bring a strong competitor in the classroom and on the field.
Jones was honored Wednesday at halftime of KU’s women’s basketball game against Oklahoma State. The award is named for Dr. Marlene Mawson, called the “mother of Kansas athletics.’’
Jones missed the 2012 softball season after tearing her ACL sprinting to first base. She never missed a rehab session in coming back for the 2013 season.
She hit .324 to help the Jayhawks win the national batting title. She stole 11 bases and had a 1.94 ERA on the mound.
Jones, a physical therapy major, is a two-time All-Academic Big 12 selection.
She and the Jayhawks begin their season Feb. 7 at Central Florida.
