Pacers fall to Lawton Mac

EDMOND, Okla. —  There will be no repeat trip to the finals of the Bruce Gray Invitational for the Pacers this year as Lawton MacArthur edged Enid 49-45 Thursday in the opening round of the tournament at Deer Creek Edmond High School.

Last season, the Pacers advanced all the way to the 2013 Bruce Gray title game before falling to the host Lady Antlers. But they will have to settle for the consolation bracket this year.

Thursday’s game was a close contest throughout with No. 17 6A Enid (8-5) holding a 21-19 lead at halftime and a one-point edge at 34-33 after three quarters. But the Pacers couldn’t hold off the three-point shooting of No. 16 5A MacArthur (5-5) in the fourth quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game.

“They made some timely three pointers on us in the fourth quarter,” said Enid head coach Robb Mills. “You are going to lose when you are trading three for two.”

Mills wasn’t pleased with several areas of play Thursday.

“We didn’t play on defense as well as we wanted to, or block out or rebound as we wanted to,” he said. “When we have done those things, we have had success. When it’s that close, those things will make a difference. We did it in spots, but that’s not enough.

“They’re a good team, but this obviously isn’t the outcome we wanted,” Mills said.

Grace Enmeier was the only Pacer in double figures, with 17 points.

“She battled and scored inside,” Mills said. “She had a nice game.”

The Pacers will have a good shot at registering their third win in five tries against a 6A squad this season when they face Putnam City West (1-13) at 10 a.m. today in the consolation bracket semifinal.

The Lady Patriots are on an 11-game losing streak after falling to host Deer Creek Edmond in their opening round game on Thursday.
