Overbeck eyes 2nd Coweta wrestling title

ENID, Okla. — Enid 220-pounder Zac Overbeck will be going for his second-straight Coweta Tournament title today and Saturday.

Plainsmen 132-pounder Billy Grothe, and 160-pounder Keegan Clayton also placed at the tournament a year ago.

The field includes three teams ranked in the top 10 in 5A — No. 3 Shawnee, No. 6 Coweta and No. 10 Western Heights as well as Wagoner, No. 8 in 4A and Perry, No. 1 in 3A.

Others in the field are Ada, Anadarko, Bartlesville, Tulsa Kelley, Claremore, Tulsa East Central, Tulsa Edison, Inola, McAlester, Pryor, Salina and Skiatook.

“This isn’t quite as strong as Geary and the Mid-America Tournaments were,’’ said Enid coach Corey Clayton, “but we’ll see some good competition. It will be a different group of teams than we have seen so far.’’

Claremore, Bartlesville and Tulsa Edison will be at Enid’s regional so the tournament could have  postseason implications in terms of seedings.

The Plainsmen will take only 10 wrestlers — Kenau Quinn (4-12), 106; Austin Loza (4-11), 120; Grothe (10-7), 132; Troy Gray (3-5), 138; Anthony Gonzales (0-5), 145; Johnny Glasgow (3-10), 152; Keegan Clayton (11-7), 160; Caleb Harris (12-5), 182; Brennen Melvin (1-5), 195; and Overbeck (12-8).
