Pacers win 6th straight

Top Lawton 59-50 in overtime; Plainsmen fall 73-68 in double OT

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s basketball doubleheader with Lawton Monday at the Enid Event Center probably told the story of the Pacers’ and Plainsmen’s seasons so far.

The Pacers (14-5) beat Lawton 59-50 in overtime as sophomore Andi Pierce scored a season-high 28 points, seven of which came in the extra period where EHS outscored the Wolverines 9-0. It was the sixth straight win for the Pacers.

The Plainsmen (2-17) fell to Lawton 73-68 in double overtime for their fifth straight loss. The Wolverines sent the game in overtime on a basket with 2.5 seconds remaining.

The Pacers and Plainsmen host rival Stillwater at 6:30 tonight. It will be Senior Night.

“This is two overtime games now where we have taken care of business,’’ said Pacers head coach Robb Mills. “It’s especially good at playoff time to win close games. It’s a good experience when you go down the stretch for the playoffs.’’

Pierce had 22 points in the second half. She was three-of-three from the field in the fourth period, and was five-of-six from the line with a field goal in overtime.

“We took care of the ball in the overtime, that’s what made the difference,’’ Pierce said. “We were a little more aggressive. That’s what we needed, and that’s what had to be done. This give us confidence and momentum going into the playoffs.’’

She credited her teammates’ sharp passes for her big night.

“I wasn’t looking to step up,’’she said. “It just comes to you. The whole team picked it up.’’

Lawton sent the game into overtime with a 7-0 run in the last 1:24 of regulation, capped by a three-pointer by Bailee Cox at the buzzer. Cox, who had 20 points, had six treys, including hitting all three of her shots from long distance in the fourth period.

“We really defended that play well at the end,’’ Mills said. “She just knocked down a good shot at the end.’’

Pierce started the 9-0 overtime run by hitting two free throws with 1:54 left. She made five free throws in the final  42.5 seconds.

“It was a good team effort in overtime,’’ Mills said.

Abby Lee joined Pierce in double figures with 11.
