EHS wrestlers fall to Ponca City

ENID, Okla. — Enid got falls from Caleb Harris and Troy Gray, but still fell to Ponca City 40-24 in the Plainsmen’s first wrestling dual of the season Tuesday at Waller Middle School.

Harris pinned Alan Steger in 1:28 at 195. Gray flattened Chris Hand in 3:52 at 138.

EHS picked up four decisions — Billy Grothe, 7-4 over Cole Burns at 132; Keegan Clayton, 6-4 over Austin Dunn at 160; Issac Barron 7-4 over Braden Bresnell at 170 and Andy Reyes 3-2 over Austin Fry at 182.

The Wildcats were able to overcome that with a forfeit, a major decision, decision and four pins.

“We had some positives,’’ said Enid coach Corey Clayton, “but until we start working harder than the team that we’re wrestling, these are the results that we’re going to get. We have to pick up our work ethic and work habits to come out on the other side of this. I don’t want them just to accept a 40-24 loss.’’

Mason Dillard was ahead 6-0 at 285 before he got caught in a hold and was pinned by Bret Bridges.

“We had some bright spots,’’ said Clayton. “Billy and Troy had good wins. I was especially pleased with Issac and Andy Reyes.’’

The Plainsmen host the Mid-America Nationals at the Enid Event Center Friday and Saturday. The first session starts at noon Friday.
