Western Oklahoma wins Senior Pro Cup

ENID, Okla. — The Western Oklahoma chapter won the South Central Sectional Senior Pro Cup Matches at Oakwood Country Club Sunday.

The matches were a warm-up for the South Central Section Senior Club Championship, which tees off today at Oakwood.

The Western section had a score of 196 to edge out the Arkansas (197) and Eastern Oklahoma (198) chapters. Kansas was fourth with a 216.

Each team had three two-man teams in a nine-hole low ball and nine-hole scramble format.

Twenty-five players are entered in the senior pro championship. The top four will qualify for the Professional National Club Championship. That tournament will determine qualifiers for the Senior PGA Tournament.

Oakwood pro Tim Mendenhall will be in a separate 29-man Hall of Fame Tournament. Some players will be in both events.

Players will begin teeing off at 8 a.m. Mendenhall will be part of a group that will tee off at 10:20 a.m.

Mendenhall, who has played in only one competitive round the past year, said his goal “is to finish.’’

“It’s a social event for me,’’ he said. “I’m getting to see all of my old friends.’’

Defending champion Pat McTigue of Tulsa will be one of the favorites, Mendenhall said, along with Mark Fuller of Edmond, Rod Nuckolls of Wichita, Jim Kane of Oklahoma City and Mike Hammond of the Wind Star Casino course. McTigue teamed with Vince Bizik of Grove for the low score in the Cup matches with a 62.

Most of the field is familiar with Oakwood, which was a long-time site of the regular South Central Sectional championship. The 36-hole event concludes Tuesday.
