Seniors in spotlight in EHS home finale

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s seniors will be in the spotlight tonight when the Plainsmen host District 6A-4 rival Mustang in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The game originally was scheduled to be a single seven-inning game, but was switched to a twinbill because of impending bad weather Tuesday when the teams were scheduled to play at Mustang.

Enid’s senior class of Alec Elliott, Zane Herbel, Jerry Kearney, Austin Minter, Zeke Sarver, Shaun Spring and manager Cody Gose will be recognized between games.

It will be the final home and regular season game for the Plainsmen  (3-9 district and 9-20 overall), who will be trying to end a six-game losing streak.

EHS coach Bill Mayberry said he will start all the seniors in the nightcap. Elliott will get the nod on the mound.

“He’s had some good games recently,’’ Mayberry said.

Mayberry said the seniors have made his return to high school coaching enjoyable.

“From the first meeting that we had until today, it’s been a very pleasurable experience,’’ Mayberry said. “It’s a really good group. I really feel that their dedication and their approach to the team concept has been priceless to me. I really appreciate them for that.’’

Spring sat out the Yukon game Saturday and may not be able to play tonight, Mayberry said.

Mustang, ranked No. 12 in Class 6A, raised their district record to 9-3 Saturday with a 13-6 win over league leader Jenks. The Broncos lost to the Trojans 8-5 Friday. They are 18-8 overall.

Enid lost to Mustang 16-8 at the recent Stillwater Festival.

“They have a really good team,’’ Mayberry said. “They are well-coached and they swing the bats well.’’

Both games can be heard on KCRC (1390 AM).

Mayberry said he was undecided about the Game 1 starter.

Enid will be finishing seventh in the district race. The playoffs begin next week.
