Spurlock steps down, Reinart new CHS AD

ENID, Okla. — Joe Spurlock is stepping down as Chisholm’s athletic director to go back to coaching (cross country and track) and teaching (geometry) at Chisholm.

He will be succeeded as the school assistant principal-athletic director by Longhorns’ football coach Joey Reinart.

Reinart and Spurlock are essentially trading jobs except Reinart will continue to coach the Chisholm football team. However, he won’t coach track as he did last spring.

“This allows me to do my first love of teaching and coaching,’’ Spurlock said. “This will allow me to be home with my wife at night and not be gone as much.’’

In his dual roles, Spurlock spent many evenings at his duties, either athletic or a school event. He had taught geometry and cross country and track before going into administration. He continued to coach cross country.

“We hate to see him step out of that because he did a really good job,’’ said Chisholm superintendent Roydon Tilley. “We’re excited about coach Reinart stepping up to take the reins. We feel like we can continue the progress we made under Mr. Spurlock.’’

Spurlock has been with the Chisholm system as a teacher and coach for 24 years. He had talked with another school system about a teaching job.

“It’s good this opportunity came up,’’ Spurlock said. “I know the expectations here and what they expect out of me. I’m glad I can do that and stay there. This will help my retirement, too.’’

Reinart is entering his fifth year in the Chisholm system. He has a 9-31 record, but the 2013 Longhorns raised their record from 1-9 to 5-5 last fall.

“It’s pretty exciting for me,’’ Reinart said. “I think it’s good for the school and the athletic program to keep things going in the direction we’re going.’’

Chisholm, under Spurlock, was a magnet for hosting events. CHS recently hosted a regional cross country meet and district baseball and softball tournaments as well as a Class 2A area tournament.

The slow-pitch softball team reached the state tournament for the first time since 2003 and the baseball team won the district tournament for the first time in several years.

“I felt we were able to do a lot of things,’’ Spurlock said. “I think things are in good shape, but there are still a lot of things to be done. Joey will do a good job of getting things done and Mrs. (principal Jaymie) Morley is always there to help us out.’’

Reinart said he hoped he could do “things as efficiently as Joe did.’’

“I’m going to make sure the other programs can develop and have everything they need from us,’’ Reinart said. “It’s going to be hectic during football season, but this is an exciting time with the amount of kids that are involved with athletics.’’

Spurlock said he can watch his son, Cody, coach the Chisholm boys basketball team and “enjoy the game now.’’

“It was a pleasure being his boss,’’ Joe Spurlock said.

As assistant principal, he was part of the administrative team that was responsible for the school receiving a grade of “A’’ from the Oklahoma Department of Education.

“I don’t know if I had a legacy or not,’’ he said. “It’s easy when you have good coaches to work with. We accomplished a lot together. Chisholm does a lot of things for academics and athletics. It takes everybody to do it, not just one person.’’
