Sooner backup QB Thompson to transfer

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma backup quarterback Kendal Thompson announced via Twitter Tuesday night that he intends to transfer after graduating in May.

“Enjoyed the 3 years that I spent at OU and appreciate all the support and love that this program has shown me. But I believe that God has another path in store for me. I will be graduating in May, and transferring to play at another college next season,” he tweeted on his account @Thurm405.

Thompson, who was a redshirt sophomore this past season, played in two games this past season. He was the No. 2 quarterback late in the year and started the second half of OU’s victory over Oklahoma State Dec. 7 after starter Trevor Knight suffered a shoulder injury. He was 2 for 9 for 17 yards in that game and was eventually replaced by Blake Bell in the fourth. It was one of two games Thompson played during his OU career.

Thompson, a former standout at Southmoore High School and the son of former OU quarterback Charles Thompson, finished the season as OU’s No. 3 quarterback. There were no signs the depth chart was going to ease next season.

If Thompson had stayed, the Sooners would have five scholarship quarterbacks when spring practice begins in March. Knight, presumably, has solidified the starting job following his offensive MVP performance in OU’s 45-31 victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Bell’s status for next season is in question. OU coach Bob Stoops said he would discuss a position change — possibly to tight end — with Bell. Or, if the fifth-year senior elected to transfer, the coaching staff would support Bell’s decision.

OU has Cody Thomas coming out of a redshirt season and Edmond Santa Fe four-star recruit Justice Hansen is already attending classes at OU and will participate in spring practice.

Assuming Thompson does graduate in May, he would be eligible to play at a BCS school immediately.
