Enid second at regional, earns full qualification

OKLAHOMA CITY — Daniel Martinez won the No. 1 singles championship to lead Enid’s boys to a second-place finish at the regional tennis tournament Tuesday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The Plainsmen qualified their entire team for the state tournament Friday and Saturday at the Tennis Center.

EHS got thirds from Blake Young, No. 2 singles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Zach Gwin and Tyler Hallett and a fourth from the No. 1 doubles team of Connor Angleton and Ryan Leap.

Martinez (30-8) lost only four games in his three matches. He defeated Edmond Memorial’s Craig Mays, 6-0, 6-3 in the finals “which was tougher than the score indicated,’’ EHS coach Darrell Herndon said.

Young lost to No. 2 seed Rahul Prabbu of Santa Fe, but won his next two matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores for third to raise his record to 10-8.

Gwin and Hallet, after losing to the No. 2 seed from Edmond Santa Fe, came back with two straight set wins to get third and raise their record to 9-8.

Leap and Angleton lost to the No. 1 seed in the semifinals and the No. 2 seed for third. It’s the third straight year Angleton has qualified for state. Leap and Angleton are now 16-23.

Edmond Memorial won the tournament with 32 points. EHS and Edmond Santa Fe tied for second with 26.

“Our first goal was to get everybody in state and we did that,’’ he said. “We’re hoping we can get a little seeding information for state, but it is tough to get a seed for someone who was third or fourth (in regionals).
