EHS soccer players receive All-State honors

ENID, Okla. — Coming off its most successful season under 14-year head coach Craig Liddell, the Enid Pacers soccer team had three players earn All-State honors and four players on the All-District team, it was announced Monday at the team’s annual awards banquet. Liddell was named All-State head coach.

Senior Sarah Blakely was named All-State, while teammates Sophie Holle and Shelley Mueller earned honorable mention All-State nods.

Abigail Resendiz joined the trio on the All-District team.

Holle set a Pacers record this past season with 13 goals, helping to lead Enid to a 10-4 mark and the team’s first berth in the state tournament since 1998.

The team also handed out its own awards at the  banquet, naming Holle, Blakely and Mueller as its Most Valuable Players.

Holle and Resendiz shared team offensive MVP honors. Blakely was named defensive MVP and “Pride of the Pacers.” Brieanna Glaze received the team leadership award, while Erin Leap, Maria Lerma and Alexa Reese were named most improved.

The Plainsmen, who finished 7-6 overall this season, also honored their players Monday night and announced Justin Miles was named All-State and goalkeeper Victor I. Hernandez earned All-State honorable mention.

Pedro Brago and Felix Mora were named All-District, while Miles and Herandez earned All-District honorable mention.

Braga was named team MVP. Mora, who led the team with seven goals, was announced as the winner of the team offensive MVP award, while Miles and Hernandez shared defensive MVP honors.

David Omar Alatorre and Jacob Slaytor received the “Pride of the Plainsmen” award. Dylan Martin, Austin McDonald, Samuel Resendiz and Luis Renteria were named most impoved. Alatorre, Samuel Alvarado, Victor R. Hernandez, Jesus Limon and Daniel Perez shared the leadership award.

    DBAT Gallegos, who has been battling adversity all season (lost five players through injuries) took advantage of their opportunities in beating Metroplex rival Dallas Mustangs, 3-0 Sunday in the finals of the Connie South Plains Regional.
    The victory put the DBAT (34-7) into the Connie Mack World Series, which begins Friday at Farmington, N.M.

  • Meadowlake retains Enid Ryder Cup

    Jay Betchan might have a statement a week before he tries to defend his Wheat Capital championship next week.
    Betchan completed a perfect 3-0 record for Meadowlake with a 6-and-4 win over John Petersen as the Municipal Course took the Enid Ryder Cup for the fourth straight year, 131⁄2-101⁄2 overall.
    The two teams split six singles matches Sunday at Oakwood in the final day of the three-day competition.

    Frank Thomas choked back tears, Joe Torre apologized for leaving people out of his speech and Tony La Russa said he felt uneasy.
    Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame can have those effects, even on the greats.
    Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the baseball shrine Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000.

     With a fifth Brickyard 400 victory on the line Sunday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago.
    Gordon nailed the final restart of the race — no given because restarts have been Gordon’s Achilles heel — to pass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne with 17 laps remaining at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
