Hennessey QB Hatchel out for season

ENID, Okla. — Hennessey senior quarterback Dylan Hatchel will miss the remainder of the 2013 season with a torn ACL and damaged lateral meniscus in his right knee.

Hatchel received the diagnosis Wednesday morning after a Monday MRI, and he and Hennessey coach Rick Luetjen confirmed the second-year starter would miss the remainder of his final season during the Eagles’ Wednesday practice.

Hatchel was injured in the third quarter of a 31-0 loss Friday at Kingfisher.

“I just made a cut, and when I did my knee just gave,” said Hatchel, who quarterbacked the Eagles to a 2-1 start this season. “My knee, it was just completely out of place, I had no strength to push back off of it. I remember feeling it pop … It scared me at first. I pretty much knew when I heard it that something wasn’t good, something wasn’t right.”

Hatchel had completed 35 of 63 passes for 253 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in 2013. He’s currently the Eagles second leading rusher with 250 yards and five scores on 36 carries, trailing only starting tailback William Arndt (261 yards on 43 carries).

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound quarterback has career totals of 1,806 yards, 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions on 160-of-271 passing, with 714 yards and 14 scores rushing.

Junior backup Tony Mendoza will fill in for Hatchel at quarterback. Mendoza has completed 8 of 16 passes for 53 yards and an interception in his career, including 1-for-3 for 1 yard in relief of Hatchel in the third and fourth quarters against Kingfisher.

“Mostly (the difference between the two is) experience, and there’s a lot to be said for that, obviously,” Luetjen said.

“Tony throws the ball well, and knows the offense in and out. There’s no issue there. We’re not having to dumb anything down for him or anything.”

Hennessey will host Tulsa NOAH (0-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the final game before the Eagles’ 2A-1 opener at home against Chisholm the following week.
