Jets to play twinbill on campus today

ENID, Okla. — Northern Oklahoma College Enid’s baseball team will be turning back the clock some today.

The Jets host Northeastern A&M in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Failing Park on the NOC Enid campus.

NOC Enid is playing on campus since Enid High is using David Allen Memorial Ballpark for the annual Gladys Winters Memorial Tournament. Admission will be free.

“I don’t think it will make any difference,’’ Leaton said. “We practice there, so we know the quirkiness of the field. You still have to make plays no matter what field you’re playing on.’’

Failing Park has slightly smaller dimensions than David Allen, but Leaton pointed out the key still will be throwing strikes.

The doubleheader is the climax of the Jets playing seven games over a five-day period. NOC Enid lost a 9-6 decision to perennial Division I power Connors on the road Thursday, but Leaton came away encouraged.

“That was the best game we played this season as far as being competitive and playing the game the way it should be played,’’ Leaton said.

The Jets had 14 hits, including four by lead-off hitter Russ Colgan against the Cowboys’ top three pitchers. Sammy Terry had a two-run homer.

“They (Connors pitchers) will be as good as anyone that we will see this season,’’ Leaton said. “We had a couple of runners on third with less than two outs and we didn’t get them in. We played well, but just came up short. We left knowing we battled our tails off for nine innings.”

The Jets will go with ace Zach Postoak in the opener and Austin Hilton in the nightcap. Postoak tossed a three-hitter in a 6-1 win over Dodge City, Kan., Tuesday. Hilton is battling for a spot in the rotation for the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference season, which begins next week at Murray State.

NEO (15-7) is coming off a doubleheader split with Longview Thursday.

The Norsemen swept the Jets, 13-3 and 3-2 in Miami on March 3.

“I feel like we have made a jump start this week,’’ Leaton said. “We’re starting to get some confidence.’’
