Enid junior’s pin highlights 54-15 loss

ENID, Okla. — Wrestling might be the only sport where the crowd is cheering at the end of a 54-15 loss.

Enid’s Mason Dillard pinned Bull Durham in one minute and 35 seconds to end the Plainsmen’s 54-15 loss to No. 3 Sapulpa on a high note.

Durham was in a position to take down Dillard, only to see the Plainsman junior flip him, put him on his back and get the first fall of his career.

“I felt him get me,’’ Dillard said. “I threw my hip and got his hip. I just tried my best. This is my first year (to wrestle) so I felt I had to get it ... it’s killer instinct ... I’m pretty proud of myself.’’

That’s exactly what Enid coach Jory Dick wanted to hear. “Killer instinct’’ is posted all over the EHS wrestling room.

“We have to have a killer instinct,’’ Dick said. “He (Dillard) was not going to give up. I’m proud of him. He really works hard.’’

The Plainsmen could take note they won four more matches than they did a year ago in a 55-0 loss to the perennial-power Chieftains.

EHS also got wins from Billy Grothe at 125, Keegan Clayton at 152 and Jake Scott at 220.

“We got a long way to go,’’ Dick said, “but we came a long way, too. Our mental toughness is not where it needs to be. I’d love to wrestle them again in about three weeks.’’

Grothe used a reversal with 1:52 left in the third period to beat Jake Wallace, 4-2. Grothe rode Wallace out after breaking a 2-2 tie. He had one of Enid’s five takedowns in the first period.

“I just tried to take it one point at a time,’’ Grothe said. “I was pretty tired, but I still had to win for my team. My conditioning paid off.’’

Clayton used a reversal with 30 seconds left to beat Lantz Luper, 4-3.

“I heard the crowd all yelling and cheering,’’ Clayton said. “I felt the need to get the reversal and win for the team. This is definitely a confidence builder. I had the team behind me. Everyone was helping out a lot and that helps your confidence.’’

Scott, Enid’s lone state qualifier last year, had three takedowns and an escape in beating Tyren Lynch, 7-2. Scott missed last week’s Perry Tournament because he was taking his ACT Test.

“I wrestled all right,’’ Scott said. “There are a few things that I can improve a little bit. I got gassed at the end. I’m still getting in wrestling shape.’’

Sapulpa got falls from Gage Martin at 106, Corey Jones at 120, Dillon Ward at 132, Bob Daniels at 160 and Jacob Busby at 195. They got  major decisions from Cambodia Peper at 138 and Braden Watkins at 170 and technical falls from Shea Conley at 145 and Kristian Mendez at 182.

Eston Jones won by forfeit at 113.

The Plainsmen go to the Dallas Duals on Saturday.
