Plainsmen win first game

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Enid’s boys had a good start and a good finish in beating Muskogee 56-40 in the consolation semifinals of the Tahlequah Tournament Friday.

The Plainsmen (1-2) will face Sapulpa in the consolation finals at 2:30 p.m. today.

Enid outscored the Roughers 18-10 in the first period and closed out the game by outscoring Muskogee 19-13 in the fourth quarter.

Aaron Austin led the attack with 16 points. Deon Parker added 11.

“This gives us some confidence,’’ said Enid coach Ryan Wilkinson. “When you have lost two games that you could have won, you start doubting yourself. We played well. This should lift their spirits.’’

Enid was hitting well from the outside at the outset of the game, Wilkinson said. That would cause Muskogee’s defense to pull away from the basket, “allowing us more opportunities to score inside.’’

Austin had nine of his points in the fourth period, which Wilkinson called “one of our better quarters this season.’’

“We were pushing the ball up the court and getting a lot of easy buckets,’’ Wilkinson said. “We were getting a lot of offensive rebounds and putbacks.’’

Michael Majors and Harrison Maud both did a good job on the offensive boards, Wilkinson said.

“It was just a good way to start the game and finish the game,’’ Wilkinson said.

Enid’s defense was able to slow down Muskogee’s fast-tempo offense, Wilkinson said.

“When they weren’t closing the gap, they started pressuring us,’’ Wilkinson said. “We had some turnovers, but we handled it pretty well.’’

Wilkinson said he liked the discipline his team showed.

“When we had the opportunity, we were able to push the ball and get layups,’’ he said. “We executed our offense when we didn’t have anything.’’

Jemarcus Jacksonhad nine points for the Plainsmen.
