Pacers fall to Lawton Mac in Altus semifinals

ALTUS, Okla. —  Unable to overcome foul trouble and cold shooting, the Enid Pacers fell 40-34 to Lawton MacArthur in the semifinals Friday at the Lady Bulldog Classic basketball tournament.

“It was a tough night for us,” said Enid head coach Robb Mills.

“We played pretty well, but they had shots fall and our open shots didn’t fall. We had a lot of open looks. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, we just couldn’t buy a bucket. Some nights are like that.”

Even though the Pacers struggled early, they held a halftime lead of 19-16, but leading scorer Courtney Chelf, who was held to 8 points Friday night, was forced to sit out most of the third quarter with foul trouble.

After the Lady Highlanders cut the Enid lead to 25-24 after three quarters, they went on to out score Enid 16-9 in the final stanza as the Pacers were forced to put Lawton Mac at the line in the late stages of the game, while they continued to struggle with their shots.

“The team played hard,” Mills said. “There were a few times when we weren’t playing smart, but the effort was there.”

Mills said another factor was MacArthur’s 6-foot-2 center, Alaysia Vann, who presented problems inside and blocked several of the Pacers’ shots as well.

The Pacers were coming off an opening night 57-32 win Thursday over Northwest Classen in the opening round of the Lady Bulldog Classic and had hopes of advancing to today’s title game.

“That’s always a goal,” said Mills. “But we weren’t looking past these guys. This is a good team that we played.”

The Pacers were led in scoring by Haven Bay who had 11 points, Grace Enmeier and Chelf added eight points, Abby Lee had four points and Andi Pierce had three points before fouling out.

The Pacers will play the loser of the late semifinal game between Wichita Falls and Lawton Eisenhower for third place at 2 p.m. today.

Enid returns home to the Mabee Center on Friday against Lawton Eisenhower.
