EHS wrestlers head to OCU Open

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s wrestlers have their final warmup for the upcoming Perry Tournament (Dec. 7-8) when they go to the Oklahoma City University Open today.

Plainsmen senior Jake Scott will be looking to repeat as the 220-pound champion.

Sophomore Zach Overbeck, a defending junior high state champion, will skip the tournament because he will be marching with the EHS band at Chicago’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Isaiah Singleton is out for the season because of a shoulder injury from football.

The Plainsmen return eight varsity starters from a year ago. Sophomore Hank Schulz, who will wrestle at 182 pounds today, has been “a big standout’’ in the preseason, Dick said.

Others back include 160-pounder Hunter Nixon, 138-pounder Scotty Phillips, 132-pounder Billy Grothe and 138-pounder Tony Saladio. Freshman Troy Gray could contend at 120 pounds.

EHS will take around 50 high school and junior high wrestlers to the tournament, which EHS coach Jory Dick called a “glorified practice.’’

“You can go out in an open tournament and take chances,’’ Dick said. “If you do have a loss, it won’t count against you. Most of the kids won’t be wrestling at the weight they will be at for regionals. Win or lose, we’ll find something that we need to work on to get better for the Perry Tournament.’’

Tony Peters, who coached Oklahoma State recruit Jordan Rogers at Meade, Wash., has been named the middle school coach at Enid.

His father introduced him to the game when he was small, putting a golf club in his hand when he was barely past the toddler stage.
He fell in love with it and worked hard, improving steadily. He became a terrific junior player and quickly improved.
He was touted as the next big thing and didn’t disappoint.
Now, at the tender age of 25, he is a multiple major champion.
Tiger Woods? Yes, once upon a tee time. But now those words are being spoken about Rory McIlroy.

  • Fowler happy with runner-up finish

For ex-Oklahoma State star Rickie Fowler, this is getting downright familiar.
    He’s not complaining.
For the second time this summer, Fowler played in the final group of a major championship, failed to overcome a big deficit, and settled for the runner-up spot.

The new-look Big 12 is ready for some football.
OK, the conference’s logo is what’s new this year. There are no changes in the makeup or format of the 10-team league, the only power conference with a round-robin schedule that determines a champion without an extra game.
