MIDLAND, Texas —
Northern Oklahoma College Enid’s women bounced back from a disappointing loss to beat the College of Southern Idaho 76-61 in a consolation semifinal at the Midland College National Invitational Tournament Friday.
The Lady Jets lost 70-63 to Odessa (Texas) College in the first round Thursday.
NOC Enid, which trailed 37-24 at halftime Thursday, led 33-31 going into intermission against the Golden Eagles.
For the second time this season the Lady Jets had four players in double figures — Marisha Wallace, 20; Chelsea Bates, a season-high 18; Rylie Swanson, a season-high 15; and Chelsea Beasler, a season-high 13.
“We played hard the entire 40 minutes,’’ said Lady Jets coach Scott Morris. “That was our challenge going in. We got good leadership out of our sophomores and that made a huge difference. We fought and scrapped to get to the foul line.’’
NOC Enid was 24 of 28 from the charity stripe. Point guard Bates was 10 of 11 from the line.
“That tells you how aggressive we were in taking it to the basket,’’ Morris said. “Chelsea and Marisha did what they were capable of doing. That goes underappreciated a lot.’’
Swanson, an Alva freshman, was 6-of-10 from the field. Beasler was 4-of-10 to take some of the pressure off Wallace.
“Rylee and Christa did what we needed them to do,’’ Morris said. “They were doing things aggressively and played good defense.’’
Morris said the Lady Jets got good play off the bench from former Enid High products Regan Crowl and Rani Melvin. Crowl drew two charges and hit a crucial three in the second half. Melvin “gave us a good boost of energy,’’ Morris said.
The Lady Jets (5-3) will play the winner of the Midland College-Angelina College game at 3 p.m. for the consolation championship.
“This is a critical time for us,’’ Morris said. “Today told us a lot about our character, but tomorrow is another challenge. We’ll see how well we do when our back isn’t against the wall. We a had a good attitude team wise today.’’
The Lady Jets return to conference play Monday when they visit Redlands.
