Relay win gives boys Ponca City track title

PONCA CITY, Okla. —  Enid’s  1,600-meter relay showed they could perform under pressure Tuesday at the Ponca City Invitational.

The Plainsmen quartet of Seth Handley, Raheem Mitchell, Alex McCoy and Alex Lofton clinched the team championship for EHS by winning their fourth-straight gold medal  3:30.31.

The Plainsmen had 110 points to outdistance Edmond North (98) and Owasso (74).

“It was pretty exciting,’’ said EHS coach Joe Miranov. “The guys ran solid throughout the day and it paid off. They have been on a roll and they knew what it took to win.’’

The 4x400 was one of four gold medals for Lofton, who won the 200 (22.3), the 400 (49.4) and teamed with Mitchell, Johnny Lawrence and Handley to win the 400-meter relay in 3:46.

“Alex Lofton is on fire,’’ Miranov said. “He’s gotten confidence in himself and he’s really matured.’’

Handley (50.5) and McCoy (51.03) were second and third in the 400 and teamed with Lawrence and Mitchell to finish second in the 800 relay (1:31.44). Lawrence was third in the long jump with a 20-2. Mitchell was fourth in the 100 (11.4).

Rob Frantz was fourth in both the shot put (42-6) and discus (126-0). Garrett Wallace was eighth in the 800 (2:14.71) and 1,600 (4:56.8, a personal best) and seventh in the 3,200 (11:15).

The 1,600 relay B team of Chris Daniels, Antonio Thomas, Adian Koehn and Noah VanKirk was fifth in 3:46.

“We had a lot of individuals step up,’’ Miranov said. “It just wasn’t our relays. Beating Edmond North is a good accomplishment.’’

The girls were seventh with 30 points.

Holly Stuart was third in the 800 (2:26.94) and fourth in the 1,600 (5:50). Both times were season bests.

The 3,200 relay of Tyler Burge, Misha Claytor, Kylan Barton and Andi Pierce was fourth in a season-best time of 10:44. EHS got fifths from Burge, 3,200, 13:25 and Pierce, 1,600, 5:55.

Macy Adams equaled her season-best jump of five feet in taking fourth in the high jump. Lizzy Grothe was sixth in the discus with a 101-5.
