ENID, Okla. — EHS wrestlers go 1-2 at Midwest City

MIDWEST CITY — Enid’s wrestlers went 1-2 in a quadrangular dual at Midwest City High School Thursday.

The Plainsmen beat Putnam City West 55-16, but lost to Norman North 42-36 and Midwest City 52-23.

Freshman 113-pounder Troy Gray and sophomore 170-pounder Hank Schulz went undefeated on the day.

“I’m real proud of both of those guys,’’ said Enid coach Jory Dick. “They did pretty well.’’

EHS was without 126-pounder Billy Grothe, 195-pounder Zach Overbeck and 220-pounder Jake Scott because of injuries and illness. Dick said he will know more about their status today.

The Plainsmen host Owasso Tuesday at Waller Middle School. The junior high starts at 6, followed by the high school match.

EHS track opens its season today at OU

Enid’s track teams will get a taste of Division I today when the Plainsmen and Pacers go to Norman for a meet at the University of Oklahoma’s indoor facilities.

The meet will be sponsored by the Edmond schools.

“It’s a positive for the kids to be able to get out and have a chance to run,’’ said EHS coach Joe Miranov. “Otherwise, we would be waiting until March to run. This gives us a chance to get our feet wet.’’

Both teams have been working out the last few weeks. Miranov said EHS will have “some quality kids’’ in both the sprints and distances.

Seth “Popeye’’ Handley, who was fifth in the 200 and fourth in the 400 last spring at the 6A state meet, is the top returnee.

Handley, Johnny Lawrence and Marshawn Mills are back from a 400-meter relay, which was second in regionals. Handley and Alex McCoy are back from a 1,600-meter relay, which was ninth at state.

Handley and McCoy will team with Mills and Alex Lofton on the 1,600-meter relay today.

“That’s going to be one of our better squads,’’ Miranov said.

Lawrence will be joined by Raheem Mitchell, Chris Daniels and Antonio Thomas in the 4x200 relay.
