POTEAU – NOC Enid’s basketball teams swept both ends of a men’s-women’s doubleheader Thursday in Poteau with the Jets coming away with their second-straight win, 77-66 over Carl Albert, while the Lady Jets won their eighth -straight game in convincing fashion, 72-54.
The Jets (13-6 overall, 5-3 conference) had four players in double digits, led by Jeremy Espinoza’s team-high 17 points and Phillip Brown with 16 points. Dalen Qualls (15) and Xavier McClish (10) rounded out the double-digit scoring.
“We had great contributions from our big guys (Espinoza and Brown) on the inside,” said Jets assistant coach Ryan Mahoney. “We really attacked the offensive glass and were able to convert on a lot of second-chance points.”
The Jets were able to put the game away down the stretch by hitting 13 of their last 14 free throws and now are 7-2 in true road games.
“We have a road warriors mentality,” Mahoney said.
The Jets are tied for second place in Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play and are 5-2 since the holiday break.
NOC ENID 72, CARL ALBERT 54 (W)
The Lady Jets remained unbeaten in OCAC play, raising their conference mark to 8-0 and their overall record to 17-2 following their victory Thursday over Carl Albert.
NOC Enid, which jumped one spot from 11th to 10th in the national rankings released Wednesday, was led in scoring by Marisha Wallace with 24 points and Ashlyn Briegge’s 23 points.
The Lady Jets built up an early lead of more than 20 points in the first half, and were never seriously challenged by Carl Albert, winless at 0-9 in conference play.
“It was a pretty lackluster effort despite the score,” Lady Jets assistant coach Josiah White said. “We played better in the second half and Sherri Lang (7 points) really gave us a lift off the bench, working the glass.
“We can’t play like this at Redlands.”
NOC Enid travels to El Reno Monday to take on Redlands in an OCAC conference game. Redlands men are 3-5 in conference and the women are 4-4.
