ENID — Northern Oklahoma College Enid couldn’t overcome a slow start in an 82-80 loss to Redlands Community College in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams Monday at the Mabee Center.

The Lady Jets won the women’s game, 60-45 behind a season-high 22 points from Marisha Wallace.

NOC Enid’s men, behind 52-40 at halftime, outscored the Cougars 40-30 in the second half, but missed a layup with nine seconds left which would have tied the game.

“We’re still learning you have to play a full 40 minutes to win games in college,’’ said Jets assistant coach Ryan Mahoney. “We’re showing effort and heart in our comebacks, but we have to do it for 40 minutes.’’

Xavier McClish led the Jets with 20 points, followed by Dalen Qualls with 14, Travis Carbajal with 12 and Brandon Burns with 10. Joey Williamson led Redlands with 22 points.

The loss dropped the Jets to 5-2 overall. NOC Enid will go to the Hesston Festival Friday and Saturday

In the women’s game, the Lady Jets raced off to a 31-14 halftime lead and never looked back. It was the third time this season NOC Enid (6-1, 1-0) has held an opponent to under 50 points.

“The first half was the bright spot of the game,’’ said Lady Jets assistant Josiah White. “Holding any team to under 50 points is a really good job defensively.’’

Wallace was joined in double figures by Chelsea Bates with 11 and Justice Payne with 10. Wallace’s previous high game was 17 points against the Oklahoma Baptist JV.

“She was big for us,’’ White said. “She finished strong and drew a lot of fouls which was good for us and good for her because it forced them to put some smaller players on her. She was able to work on the glass pretty well.’’
