Enid, Lawton try for 3rd time

ENID, Okla. — Maybe the third time will be the charm.

After the game’s first two appearances were postponed, the Enid Pacers and Plainsmen will try one more time to play their original season opener, welcoming Lawton High School to the Enid Event Center tonight, the Pacers at 6:30 p.m. and the Plainsmen at 8 p.m.

The game originally was scheduled for Nov. 22, Enid’s intended season opener, but the game was postponed because Lawton football — and therefore much of Lawton’s boys basketball team — was still playing in the postseason. Weather claimed the first reschedule on Feb. 4.

The Pacers, ranked 15th in Class 6A, enter with a five-game win streak in tow, but haven’t beaten a 6A team ranked in the top 20, losing their three previous chances but getting another tonight against No. 20 Lawton (11-8).

The Plainsmen (2-16) are coming off a 58-42 loss to Elk City on Friday, their fourth straight. They’ll host a 10-9 Lawton team that’s ranked 17th in 6A but has lost six of its last eight.

As a city, Lawton has been a bugaboo for Enid basketball, with Eisenhower sweeping the Plainsmen and MacArthur beating the Pacers last month. Enid hosts Stillwater on Tuesday and visits Lawton on Friday and Lawton Eisenhower on Saturday.

Both games can be heard on KGWA (960 AM).
