ENID, Okla. — Garrett Wallace, a year ago in his varsity cross country race, finished 27th at the Enid Invitational with a time of 13:37 over the two-mile course at Crosslin Park.

Thursday, the Plainsman sophomore finished fifth in the 2013 Enid Invitational over the same course with a time of 11:39.21, almost a two-minute difference.

“That’s a big improvement,’’ said Enid coach Joe Miranov. “It’s all mental ... he’s so much mentally stronger this year.’’

“I really felt good,’’ Wallace said. “I feel like I’ve made up for what I’ve done (in the past). I was real happy about my time. It’s about where I want to be. A lot of that has been eating healthy, drinking plenty of water and staying healthy.’’

The Pacers had two runners in the top 10 — Abby Resendiz, who was fifth in 6:17 and Tyler Berge, who was ninth in 6:26.41 over the one-mile course.

Resendiz ran 11 seconds faster than she did las year. Berge ran more than 12 seconds faster than last year.

“It’s our turf,’’ Resendiz said. “It’s (time) all right for right now. I wanted to get under 6:20. I’ve been working a lot for this. I’m glad it wasn’t too hot. That would have really slowed us down.’’

Berge had set a goal of 6:20, but was happy with her time.

“I’m very excited to run this for the first meet,’’ she said. “I just tried to keep up with Abby and not let any girls pass me. It was a good confidence builder. It makes me excited for the upcoming season.’’

The boys were fourth with 112 points to place behind Stillwater (27), Kingfisher (69) and Perry (86).

The Plainsmen had two others in the top 10 — Gavin Lack, 13th, 12:15 and Jake Taylor, 18th, 12:21.

“I could have done better at the beginning,’’ Lack said. “It was OK. I did a lot of running in the off-season, which paid off.’’

“I didn’t run as well as I would have liked to,’’ Taylor said. “I’m still happy with what I did. I haven’t been running that much.’’

Nate House was 27th in 14:04.

“I did OK, but it wasn’t my best,’’ he said.

Troy Gray was 39th in 14:25.

The girls were fifth with 137 points, to place behind Edmond Memorial (44), Sand Springs (100), Stillwater (107) and Perry (109).

Arely Ramirez was 26th in 7:11. Gabrielle Dick was 38th in 7:25.19. Irene DeLaTorre ws 53rd in 7:58.

“I think I could have done better,’’ Ramirez said. “I should have pushed myself harder the last 200 yards.’’

“I thought I did OK,’’ Dick said.

Miranov said he was pleased with two girls being in the top 10 and the both teams’ overall effort.

“A lot of these kids are still learning how to run,’’ Miranov said. “I saw some good things.’’

Burlington’s Sarah Garvie was eighth in 6:25. DCLA’s Jessica Blanton was 10th in 6;26.81.

Kingfisher’s Alan Murphey won the boys race in 10:59. Zac Porterfield of Stillwater was second in 11:01. Kingfisher’s Sam Walter was 10th in 12:09.

“It was exhausting,’’ Murphey said. “I never had a good race here before, so it feels pretty good.’’

Sand Springs’ Morgan Long won the girls race in 5:42.85. Jaclyn Hummel of Edmond Memorial was second in 5:45.

“That was a course record for me,’’ Long said. “I’m very happy for that. I tried to go out strong and trust my pace. It was a nice day, and having strong competition helped.’’
