Bruins outlast Plainsmen

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. —  Enid played its closest game of 2014 Thursday in the opening round of the Arvest/ConocoPhillips Invitational, but an offensive breakdown that spanned most of the fourth quarter against host Bartlesville sent the Plainsmen to their 10th straight defeat, 49-43.

Enid trailed 37-36 entering the fourth quarter, but five of the Plainsmen’s first seven possessions in the final frame ended in turnovers, and Bartlesville’s one-point lead jumped to nine.

“We (get) tight,” said Enid head coach Ryan Wilkinson. “No one wants to take shots, no one shoots with confidence. You just have to be there enough times. The more you’re there, the more you end up successful.”

Enid went scoreless for the first five-and-a-half minutes of the fourth, and finished with seven points in the quarter, almost half of them coming on a Braden Rogers three with less than five seconds left.

Nick Schumaker hit four threes and finished with a game-high 23 points for Bartlesville (3-5).

“He’s a good shooter,” Wilkinson said. “We told guys to cheat out on him and we wouldn’t make the adjustment.”

Rogers finished with 14 and Michael Majors added 11 for the Plainsmen, who played their closest game since a two-point loss to Tahlequah on Dec. 12, but are still searching for their first win of the season.

Enid will play at 5:30 p.m. today in the tournament’s second round against the loser of Thursday’s nightcap between Southmoore and Bixby.
