ENID, Okla. — The Enid Pacers basketball team goes for a second straight win today following a 71-34 drubbing of Checotah Monday in the opening round of the Bedouin Shrine Classic in Muskogee.

The 15th-ranked Pacers (5-2) take on Class 5A McAlester (2-6) in the large school girls semifinal at 4 p.m. at Muskogee High School.

The Lady Buffaloes advanced to face Enid after defeating Tulsa Webster 58-43 on Tuesday. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for McAlester, with its only other win of the season coming against Class 3A Metro Christian 39-31 in the opening round of the Okemah Tournament on Dec. 12.

The Pacers’ opening-round win Monday over Class 4A Checotah was fueled by a strong defensive effort that forced Checotah into 16 first-half turnovers in a game the Pacers controlled throughout.

“We just wanted to execute defensively, and just make it tough for them to get the 3-point shots that they like, and to really stay strong and keep them out of the paint,” said Enid head coach Robb Mills after the game Monday.

The Lady Wildcats did not have a single player register double-digit scoring, while the Pacers were led by Andi Pierce’s 20 points and 16 points from Haven Bay.

The winner of today’s game advances to the 7:30 p.m. championship game of the Bedouin Shrine Classic on Saturday against the winner of today’s other semifinal between host Muskogee and Hilldale.

The loser plays for third place at noon on Saturday.

Muskogee advanced to the semifinals with a 68-13 win over Tulsa Hale on Tuesday, while Hilldale will be playing its first game after advancing in the opening round via forfeit over Coweta on Monday when Coweta failed to make the 30-mile trip to Muskogee due to weather and was a no-show for its game.

The Pacers advanced to the championship of last year’s tournament in Muskogee before falling to the host Rougherettes 68-66 in the title game.
