EHS girls motivated for Muskogee tourney

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s girls basketball team won’t be lacking for motivation when the No. 2-seeded Pacers (4-2) face 4A Checotah (3-2) at 4:30 p.m. today in the first round of the 34th annual Bedouin Shrine Classic at Muskogee High School. EHS lost to host Muskogee 68-66 in the finals of last year’s tournament.

The Pacers will be looking to bounce back from a 52-48 overtime loss to Bishop McGuinness on Friday.

“We’re hungry to play again after a tough loss Friday,’’ said Enid head coach Robb Mills. “We’re not taking anything for granted, but we would like to get some revenge from last year.’’

The tournament is set over six days, instead of the usual three. The Enid-Checotah winner  doesn’t play again until 4:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of Tuesday’s game against Tulsa Webster (3-2) and McAlester (1-5). The losers of those two games play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The finals are 7:30p.m. Saturday at the Muskogee Civic Center.

“I like that format,’’ Mills said. “You get a chance to go home and prepare for your next opponent. Playing two days in a row isn’t as taxing as three. We played three days in a row at Tahlequah and we were just exhausted by the last game.’’

The other side of the bracket has Hillsdale (3-2) against Coweta (1-5) at 4:30 p.m. today and Muskogee (5-1) against Tulsa Hale (0-5) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, both at the Civic Center.

Checotah has wins over Kellyville (57-43), Henryetta (49-39) and Eufaula (61-48) and has lost to Morris (44-31) and Beggs (70-39).

Enid blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead against McGuinness.

“We played really well for three quarters,’’ Mills said.  “We just didn’t get things done in the fourth period. Our goal is to finish the game mentally and physically. We didn’t finish well against McGuinness.’’

Haven Bay, who had a career-high 22 points Friday, leads the EHS offense, averaging 12.7 points per game, followed by Andi Pierce (12.3) and Abby Lee (9.8).

The game can be heard on KGWA (960 AM).
