Coaches out at Sharon-Mutual amid OSBI investigation

Staff reports

WOODWARD, Okla. — Two Sharon-Mutual coaches resigned and another was suspended this month following the announcement of an investigation into alleged “inappropriate touching” at the school, the Woodward News reported.

Reese Lujan, a teacher and boys basketball coach, left the school on Dec. 6, followed by Sharon-Mutual high school principal and head football coach Chris Syms on Dec. 9, District Superintendent Jeff Thompson told the Woodward News. Syms was not listed as a suspect in the investigation.

Girls basketball coach Kevin Krows was suspended.

An incident report by a school official described possible “inappropriate behavior” between staff members and a student or students. The report cites “inappropriate touching” as the type of offense.

No charges have been filed, but the allegations are currently under investigation, said Woodward County Sheriff Gary Stanley, who requested that the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation handle the report because a deputy has children that attend Sharon-Mutual.

Aside from that, “the only thing I am able to say about the investigation is that there is one,” Thompson told the Woodward News.

Syms coached Sharon-Mutual to a 40-11 record in four seasons, finishing 12-2 with a 42-40 loss to eventual Class C runner-up Tipton in 2013.

Lujan has been an educator since 2005, with stops at Timberlake and Fort Supply before being hired to teach art and coach Sharon-Mutual’s boys, who are 0-6 on the season.

Krows has coached the girls team since 2009. The Lady Trojans are 4-2 and ranked No. 15 in Class B.
