Longhorns look to bounce back

ENID, Okla. — The Chisholm Longhorns (2-3) will look to get back on track tonight at Longhorn Community Stadium when they host the Crooked Oak Ruf-Nex (2-3) in a non-district game.

The Longhorns lost 46-6 to 2A defending state champion Hennessey last week, while the Ruf-Nex held off Luther 33-26. Chisholm leads the series between the schools 3-1, beating Crooked Oak 35-29 in the last meeting in 2007,

“We have had a good week of practice,” said Chisholm head coach Joey Reinart. “We continued to work on doing those things that will help us get better as we jump back into district play next week at Perry.”

Reinart said the Ruf-Nex run a very similar offense to the Longhorns and make use of the option to keep the chains moving.

“They have some good athletes,” he said. “They are similar to us, but they like to slow down their motion where we like to use our jet motion.

“We want to play downhill. Our jet motion sets that up. Being similar helped us in practice this week. They break a lot of tackles so we have to wrap up on defense.

“Offensively, we want to get into a solid run game and build on that going into Perry next week.”

Crooked Oak has some size, but Reinart said the team speed of the Longhorns should overcome that.

Reinart said the Longhorns have learned to adapt to bigger teams after games against Alva and Hennessey the last two weeks.

“It all depends on how bad we want to out-work them,” he said. “They are big, but not very fast. We did some good things against Hennessey to get better. We hung in there and want to keep progressing.”

Because neither team throws the ball very much, Reinart emphasized taking care of the ball and limiting the number of mistakes this week in practice.

“The key for us will be tackling,” Reinart said. “We have to make a commitment to making solid tackles and not letting them slip by for a big play.

“This game will be a good springboard for us into district play next week and hopefully, a springboard into the playoffs.”
