Volleyers fall in regional finals

TULSA, Okla. —  Enid fell to top-ranked Tulsa Bishop Kelley Thursday in straight sets in the championship game of the 6A volleyball regional on the Comets’ home court. The win sends Tulsa Kelley into the state tournament. The loss ends the season for Enid.

The Pacers (25-10) got off to a good start in the tournament defeating Muskogee 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-17) before losing to Kelley (2-25, 7-25, 13-25), which defeated Sapulpa to reach the championship game.

“The girls played great against Muskogee,” said Pacers head coach Steve Bloom. “They came out very focused and played their best volleyball of the year.”

Senior Mariah Wagner led the Pacers in the match, connecting on 16-of-18 serves with two aces and six kills and six blocks. Junior Chloe Cordell had six kills and three blocks, while serving 10-of-12 with two aces.

Macee Owen was perfect at the serving line, going 19 of 19, while Grace Enmeier was eight of 10 with five kills and five blocks.

After a short break before the final match after defeating Muskogee, Bloom said the Pacers were on their heels from the very beginning of their match against Tulsa Kelley (34-4).

“I don’t know why, but we came out real flat,” he said. “We couldn’t get anything going. We never got into rhythm.

“They came out fast and took advantage of our weaknesses like good teams do. They are a very good team in all aspects of the game, and should make a run to win the state title.”

Bloom was pleased with the Pacers’ season. The Pacers were 12-21 last season and were 4-22 and 5-22 the two seasons before.

“The girls had a great year,” he said. “That is the best we’ve done in awhile. The great thing is we have seven starters that will be returning for next season.

“We are already looking forward to next season. We will come back with a lot of experience and we are expecting a great year.

“This team was very successful. They played some good volleyball, but we just came up short tonight. The girls matured and we’re setting our sights on going to the state tournament next year.

“We would have liked some different results against Bishop Kelley, but we’ll go back to work with our off-season workouts and get ready for 2013.”
