Cowley sweeps NOC Enid

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Cowley County hit 11 of 23 shots from 3-point range to beat the Northern Oklahoma College Enid men, 75-66 Thursday night.

In the women’s game, Cowley upset the No. 9-ranked Lady Jets, 67-60, ending NOC Enid’s six-game winning streak.

The Jets (8-4) trailed 33-32 at halftime, but couldn’t slow the Tigers’ 3-point shooting. Dalen Qualls led the offense with 15 points, followed by Xavier McClish with 13, Connor Brooks with 12 and Travis Carbajal with 10.

“I think we played well,’’ said Jets assistant Ryan Mahoney. “We competed for all 40 minutes. They hit two big threes against our zone in the middle of the second half with the clock running down. It pushed a six-to-seven point lead to 12 to 13.’’

Kamren Belin led the Tigers with 22 points. It was the men’s final game before Christmas break.

In the women’s game, Cowley used a 41-33 second-half run to avenge a 74-58 loss to the Lady Jets in Enid on Nov. 16.

Ashlyn Briegge had 17 points in a losing cause, followed by Marisha Wallace with 15 and Chelsea Bates with 12. Bates had five rebounds, three assists and only two turnovers against Cowley’s pressure.

“We’re real proud of her on that,’’ said NOC Enid assistant coach Josiah White.

However, Cowley made up for Bates’ efforts with 18 offensive rebounds and forcing several NOC Enid turnovers.

“We just had too many turnovers,’’ White said. “For them to have 18 offensive rebounds, that really hurt us.’’

Symone Murray led the Lady Tigers with 16 points.

NOC Enid (10-2) will play at Southwestern Kansas’ junior varsity tonight in the Lady Jets’ final game before Christmas break.

His father introduced him to the game when he was small, putting a golf club in his hand when he was barely past the toddler stage.
He fell in love with it and worked hard, improving steadily. He became a terrific junior player and quickly improved.
He was touted as the next big thing and didn’t disappoint.
Now, at the tender age of 25, he is a multiple major champion.
Tiger Woods? Yes, once upon a tee time. But now those words are being spoken about Rory McIlroy.

  • Fowler happy with runner-up finish

For ex-Oklahoma State star Rickie Fowler, this is getting downright familiar.
    He’s not complaining.
For the second time this summer, Fowler played in the final group of a major championship, failed to overcome a big deficit, and settled for the runner-up spot.
