EHS wrestlers gear up for Geary tourney

ENID, Okla. — The next three days could determine at what weight Enid’s Caleb Harris will be going at the rest of the season.

Harris, who has a record of 6-3 in the first semester at 195 pounds, is expected to go at 182 for tonight’s dual at Stillwater and the Geary Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Harris had to be certified at 182 before Jan. 15 to wrestle at that weight at the regional and state.

“If we’re going to entertain the idea of using him there, this is the week to see where we’re at,’’ said Enid coach Corey Clayton. “I think Caleb would be up at the No. 3 or 4 spot at either weight. The question is whether we could make it to the finals at 182.’’

Harris was fifth in a solid field at the Mid-America Nationals in Enid last month.

Stillwater has three nationally-ranked wrestlers in 132-pounder Kaid Brock, 152-pounder Joe Smith and 170-pounder Chandler Rogers.

Thanks to five move-ins, Stillwater — which finished fifth in the state a year ago — is ranked No. 3 behind Edmond North and Broken Arrow, which defeated Enid 66-12 in a dual last month.

“There’s no place to hide in 6A,’’ Clayton said. “They are pretty solid from top to bottom.’’

Clayton,  therefore, will judge the dual not from the score, but from his team’s effort. He said he can use it as a gauge of how much his team improved over the Christmas holidays.

“We know they are really good,’’ Clayton said. “Are we going to compete and scrap, or are we going to lay down and let them have their way? I’m trying to get them to understand that you may not win all the time, but you don’t quit because the odds are against us.”

Geary is unique with its format of a blind draw and no seeds. The best two wrestlers at a weight could face off in the first round. Edmond North, Broken Arrow and Lawton MacArthur head the field.

Harris will be joined in the EHS lineup by Kenau Quinn (1-6) at 106, Austin Lora (1-6) at 113, Troy Gray (1-1) at 132, Billy Grothe (5-3) at 138, Johnny Glasgow (3-6) or Anthony Gonzales (0-1) at 145, Gonzales or John Choi (2-5) at 152, Keegan Clayton (4-4) at 160, Issac Barron (2-0) or Andy Reyes (3-5) at 170, Brendon Melvin (0-0) at 195, Zach Overbeck (4-4) at 220 and Mason Dillard (3-5) at 285.
