Sooner Report: Stoops gives nod of respect to W.Va.'s defense

Norman Transcript / CNHI News Service

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was put in a tough spot this week when he was asked about West Virginia's defense.

Stoops was very diplomatic in his reply.

"People have executed in different ways against them. They're good," he said. "The structure is sound, good. They make you execute and work to beat them. That's what you have to do."

The Mountaineers are 110th or worse in total defense (487.11 yards per game), scoring defense (41.44) and pass defense (343.56).

Stoops acknowledge his praise of West Virginia's defense was a minority opinion, but there was a reason for it.

"They don't have to go play them. We do," he said.
